Essential Oils vs Fragrance Oils: Which is Better?
There is a common misconception in home fragrance that essential oils are somehow superior to fragrance oils. Perhaps it is because the word natural feels reassuring, while something that has been carefully formulated can sometimes seem less desirable. But when it comes to candles and home fragrance, the reality is far more nuanced. Essential oils and fragrance oils are different ways of creating scent. Both can be beautiful, both have advantages and limitations, and neither is automatically better simply because of where its ingredients originated.
What is the difference between essential oils and fragrance oils?
Essential oils are concentrated aromatic extracts obtained from botanical materials such as flowers, leaves, peel, bark and wood. Fragrance oils are composed to create a particular scent and may contain naturally derived ingredients, synthesised aroma materials, or a combination of both. Modern perfumery uses both because each brings something different. Fragrance oils can also recreate scents that would be difficult, impractical or sometimes undesirable to source naturally. Ambergris is a fascinating example. For centuries, this naturally occurring substance from sperm whales was highly prized in perfumery for the depth and longevity it could bring to a fragrance. Today, perfumers can create similar effects without relying on natural ambergris, a useful reminder that natural does not always mean better.
Are essential oils better in candles?
Not necessarily. An essential oil may smell beautiful in the bottle, but a candle asks much more of a fragrance. It must work successfully with the wax, wick and heat of the flame while releasing a balanced scent into the room. Fragrance oils created specifically for home fragrance can offer greater consistency and more control over how a candle performs both before and during burning. Some essential oils work beautifully in candles, others are more volatile or may not provide the strength, complexity or stability required. So perhaps the more useful question is not “Is it natural?” but “Has it been properly formulated and tested for its intended use?”
Is natural always better for the environment?
Again, not necessarily. Producing natural fragrance ingredients can require considerable quantities of plant material, land, water and energy. Some ingredients are also derived from plants or natural resources where demand needs to be carefully managed. In some circumstances, recreating an aroma material through modern fragrance science can reduce pressure on scarce natural resources while providing greater consistency. That does not mean manufactured fragrance materials are always the more sustainable choice either. Environmental impact depends on the individual ingredient, how it is sourced and how it is produced.
What about safety?
Essential oils are naturally occurring, but that does not mean they are automatically harmless. Natural fragrance materials can contain substances capable of causing sensitisation or allergic reactions, just as manufactured fragrance materials can. Home fragrance products in Great Britain are subject to safety and chemical classification requirements, including prescribed hazard warnings and labelling where required. The fragrance industry also works to recognised standards governing how particular fragrance materials may be used. Importantly, those safety considerations apply to naturally occurring ingredients too. So whether an ingredient began in a field or a fragrance laboratory is not, by itself, a measure of its safety.
So, which is better?
Neither is inherently better. A beautifully formulated essential oil fragrance can be exceptional; so can a fragrance created using a thoughtful combination of natural and synthesised materials. What matters far more is the quality of the ingredients, responsible sourcing, careful formulation, appropriate testing and how successfully the finished fragrance performs.
